Medication
At the Children In Mind service we can safely prescribe medication and have medication management processes in place.
We use an online pharmacy which delivers medication to your home address using specific courier services. This is a quick and efficient process where we have good outcomes for people receiving medications quickly. This can also be monitored and any issues are raised and resolved quickly.
Medication
The online pharmacy we use is called RX Cloud Pharmacy. This is a digital secure platform that we upload prescriptions on and it gets actioned very quickly, usually within 30 mins of the upload. This if for generic prescriptions which generally covers, sleep medications, anti anxiety medication and anti depressant medications. We can also put repeat prescriptions on the system so when you are running out of medication you can request it from the online pharmacy. We normally put up 3 months’ supply.
For ADHD prescriptions and medications, due to the stimulant medications being controlled drugs, we need to send a hard copy of a controlled drug prescription to the online pharmacy before they will dispense the medication. It is helpful to notify us with 10 days’ notice when you need medication so we can action this quickly for you so there are no issues with receiving medication for continuous treatment.
We routinely review people taking medication in line with guidance and our policies of medication management.
For ADHD medication we will need to take physical observations. Physical observations are blood pressure, height, weight and pulse.
We do not see medication as the only intervention and it is helpful for children and young people to engage in additional psychological therapy services, and where children and young people cannot engage, we try and support parents and carers with this. We have a duty of care to holistically treat and support children, young people, families and carers. As a service, we do not prescribe medication in isolation and we deliver integrated and collaborative approaches.
ADHD medications can be expensive and have ongoing costs. We do have a shared care agreement for people who are residing in England. This is an agreement between our service and your GP. This is where we commence treatment and request your GP support with prescriptions and medications. We can only request this from the GP and they may refuse to do this which will result in us supplying prescriptions and medications via the online pharmacy.
You may have heard of the term titration for ADHD medication. This is where you start medication and build up to a therapeutic dose. In the early phases this needs to be managed with sensitivity to monitor whether there are any side effects and if medications need tweaking in order to gain the maximum benefits. A GP will not accept a shared care agreement until medication has been titrated and we are satisfied the dose is therapeutically correct and there are no side effects that require monitoring outside of routine medication management.
We will write to your GP following medication reviews to keep the GP informed and we do this routinely with psychological services.
